Thailand to Get a Roadmap for Solar Energy

On Friday June 21, the Chulalongkorn University’s Energy Research Institute and the Ministry of Energy Department of Alternative Energy Development and Energy Efficiency (DEDE) hosted a meeting to discuss the development of Thailand’s Solar PV Roadmap. More than 40 participants from solar industry, the government, NGOs, and academia participated. All three utilities, the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA), and Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) were also present.

Solar power development in Thailand has rapidly expanded with many developers receiving support from a subsidy adder or premium- priced feed-in tariffs. Thus far, the growth has been largely limited to large scale solar farms. However, the Solar PV Roadmap Process is also aimed at expanding solar PV into the residential and commercial-scale rooftop sectors. While recently the cost of solar electricity has dwindled, solving planning and technological issues remains imperative to support greater integration of renewable energy from large and small producers.
